Thousands Mourn Christians Killed In Jordan’s Worst Church Attack In Decades

Thousands of Jordanians gathered Sunday to mourn eight of the nine Christians killed when suspected Islamist gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church, in what was described as the country’s worst such attack in decades.

Pray →God of All Comfort, we lift before You the grieving communities in Jordan, shaken by the attack at a Greek Orthodox church. You see each one whose heart is heavy and tears fall freely — surround them with Your comfort that sustains in the valley of deep sorrow. You are near to the brokenhearted; let them feel Your nearness. In this place of uncertainty, establish Your peace where chaos seeks to linger. Let the light of Christ shine in Jordan, opening hearts even among those who oppose His name. Strengthen believers who stand in faith amid fear, and make known the salvation that turns mourning into joy. For Your glory and in Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Persecution in Africa: A pastor’s plea to the Church

The post Persecution in Africa: A pastor’s plea to the Church appeared first on Open Doors.

Pray →Everlasting God, we lift up the pastors and believers across Africa who face persecution and turmoil for Your name. In places where darkness seeks to silence their witness, You, who neither slumber nor sleep, are ever watching over Your people. Let Your light shine brighter than fear in these lands. Strengthen the churches who continue gathering under threat and sustain leaders who shepherd flocks with courage in hostile environments. Reveal Jesus to those whose hearts are hardened, turning opponents into disciples by Your divine grace. Advance the Good News with power and love, breaking barriers of hostility through the humble obedience of Your people. Establish Your reign across Africa that every tongue may confess Jesus is Lord. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our mighty Savior. Amen.

Shock and grief in a Jordanian village after church attack

Workers were cleaning the last traces of blood from St George's Church in Jordan's Hammoud the day after a deadly attack, when visitors arrived to express their solidarity amid an atmosphere of shock and grief.

Pray →God of All Comfort, we lift up Hammoud, a village in mourning after the attack on St George's Church. In the midst of shock and sorrow, be their refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Let Your peace settle upon those who gather to grieve, and comfort those who clean away the traces of violence. Pour out Your Spirit to mend broken hearts and bring healing to this wounded place. Reveal Jesus to the community — to those who know You as well as to those who need Your saving grace. Quiet the turmoil within hearts and minds, drawing them toward Your love that casts out fear. We ask these things for Your glory and name's sake, trusting in the One who bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. Amen.
