Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way music is created. Tools such as Suno allow users to generate melodies, arrangements, and recordings from simple text prompts. While some view AI with suspicion, believers should recognize that technology itself is morally neutral. Like a piano, microphone, printing press, or recording studio, AI is ultimately a tool. The question is not whether the tool exists, but how it is used.
The music industry continues to debate AI's role. One recent article quoted Fender's perspective: “AI isn’t the destination. Making music is.” That insight aligns with a biblical worldview. Technology is not the goal; the glory of God is. If AI helps believers write songs that proclaim Christ, teach Scripture, encourage the Church, and reach the nations, it can serve a redemptive purpose.
Scripture repeatedly commands God's people to sing. Psalm 96:1 declares, “Sing to the Lord a new song.” Colossians 3:16 instructs believers to teach and admonish one another through “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” AI can help fulfill those commands by lowering barriers that once prevented many Christians from creating music.
Some fear AI will replace human creativity. Yet human creativity originates from people made in the image of God, not from machines. Research continues to show that human experience and creativity remain distinct and essential. AI may assist the process, but it cannot worship.
Jesus said that if His followers were silent, “the very stones would cry out” (Luke 19:40). The Church should not allow the loudest voices using new technologies to be those who oppose Christ. Instead, believers can redeem these tools, filling them with truth, beauty, Scripture, and worship that declares the supremacy of Jesus Christ.
If the rocks are ready to cry out, the Church should be singing first.
